This is how Shopify Agentic Storefronts work. And if you run a Shopify store, this changes how customers will find and buy your products.


Agentic Storefronts Explained

Agentic Storefronts are a new sales channel in Shopify that connects your product catalog directly to AI chat platforms.

Instead of customers browsing your website, AI assistants browse for them. The entire shopping journey happens inside a conversation with ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot.

Here’s the shift:

Traditional shopping: Customer searches Google → clicks your website → browses products → adds to cart → completes checkout.

Agentic shopping: Customer asks AI assistant → AI finds your products → AI presents recommendation → customer approves → checkout happens inside the chat.

Your products become visible to AI shoppers, not just human browsers. Someone who never types your URL might still purchase from you.

Three things converged in early 2026 that made this practical.

AI Shopping Adoption Exploded

The numbers paint a clear picture.

According to RetailCustomerExperience, 70% of shoppers had used AI tools for shopping by late 2025. This isn’t early adopters anymore. It’s mainstream.

During Cyber Week 2025, AI agents influenced 20% of orders, contributing $67 billion in global sales (Martech.org, 2025). Traffic from AI channels like ChatGPT tripled compared to 2024.

On January 11, 2026, Shopify and Google released the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).

Before UCP, each AI assistant needed custom integration with each store. Impossible to scale.

Now there’s a common language. ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot can all interact with participating merchants through the same protocol.

For Shopify merchants, UCP support is built in by default. Your store already speaks the language.

Agentic Storefronts currently support four AI platforms.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

ChatGPT reached roughly 800 million weekly active users by June 2025 (Shopify, 2025). According to Vertu’s January 2026 analysis, it holds 68% of the AI chatbot market share.

Shopify’s integration includes Instant Checkout, meaning customers complete purchases inside the chat without redirects.

Walmart launched direct shopping through ChatGPT in October 2025 (reported by multiple sources). Now Shopify merchants have the same capability.

Google AI Mode and Gemini

Google’s AI Mode in Search lets users complete purchases without leaving the search results page. The Gemini app offers the same functionality.

Shopify Catalog API

Shopify’s catalog infrastructure shares your product data directly with integrated AI platforms.

When you enable Agentic Storefronts, your products enter this shared catalog. AI assistants can query it in real-time for pricing, availability, and specifications.

This is the most reliable pathway because the data comes straight from your store.

Web Crawling

AI agents can crawl and index your storefront, similar to how Google indexes websites.

They look for structured data markup, specifically JSON-LD Schema. The better your markup, the better AI understands your products.

Merchant Product Feeds

You can submit product data directly to specific AI platforms.

This gives you more control over exactly what data appears, but requires more manual management.

The critical factor across all three pathways: data quality.

AI agents rely on structured product information. If your descriptions are incomplete, your prices are outdated, or your inventory data is wrong, agents either skip your products or misrepresent them.

Agentic Storefronts are currently in early access. Here’s how setup works for eligible stores.

Step 1: Verify Eligibility

Check your Shopify admin for Agentic Storefronts availability. Not all stores have access yet as Shopify rolls this out gradually.

You need:

  • An active Shopify plan
  • Complete product data meeting minimum quality standards
  • Good standing with Shopify’s policies

Step 2: Access the Sales Channel

Navigate to Shopify Admin → Sales Channels → Agentic Storefronts.

This is where you manage all AI commerce integrations from one place.

Step 3: Select Your Channels

Choose which AI platforms to enable:

  • ChatGPT
  • Google AI Mode / Gemini
  • Microsoft Copilot
  • Perplexity

You don’t have to enable all of them. Start with the platforms your customers use most.

Shopify introduced a new plan option for brands that want AI channel access without using Shopify for their primary store.

The Agentic Plan lets you:

  • List products in Shopify Catalog
  • Syndicate to ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini
  • Manage everything from Shopify admin
  • Access Agentic Storefronts infrastructure

This is designed for brands already selling through other platforms who want to reach AI shoppers without rebuilding their entire operation on Shopify.

If you’re already a Shopify merchant, this doesn’t apply to you. You have access through your existing plan.


Connection to UCP

Agentic Storefronts run on the Universal Commerce Protocol.

UCP is the standardized system that enables AI assistants to:

  1. Query product catalogs
  2. Check inventory and pricing
  3. Compare options across merchants
  4. Complete checkout
  5. Handle basic customer support

Partners in UCP include Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair, Stripe, and Visa.

Benefits

New discovery channel. Customers who never search for your brand can still find your products through AI recommendations.

Reduced friction. Customers don’t navigate your website, get distracted, or abandon carts. The purchase happens in one conversation.

Early mover advantage. Adoption is still low. Merchants who optimize for AI discovery now build an advantage before competitors catch up.

Trade-offs

Some control ceded. The checkout experience happens on the AI platform, not your site. You can’t customize that flow the same way you customize your website.

Potential additional fees. Different AI platforms have different fee structures. This may add to your cost of sale.

Post-purchase responsibility. Agentic Storefronts handle the sale. Post-purchase support, returns, and customer service remain your responsibility.

Full liability. You’re still accountable for everything: product quality, accurate descriptions, on-time delivery.
