ChatGPT processes 50 million shopping queries every day (Alhena.ai, 2026). When a shopper asks “best running shoes under $100” or “organic face moisturizer for dry skin,” ChatGPT pulls from millions of product listings and recommends a handful. If you run a Shopify store, your products are already in that pool. But showing up in ChatGPT product recommendations is not the same as ranking well in them.

Here is how the recommendation system actually works, what signals ChatGPT uses to decide which products to show first, and what you can do to improve your chances.

ChatGPT does not crawl your website the way Google does. Instead, your product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, a centralized system that syndicates product information to AI platforms automatically.

Semantic Relevance

A shopper asking “waterproof running shoes for wide feet under $120” gets matched to products where the description mentions waterproof materials, wide fit availability, and the price falls within range. Writing natural, detailed product page descriptions matters more than stuffing keywords.

When ChatGPT recommends your product, the shopper sees a product card with your image, title, price, and key details. The experience differs by device:

  • Mobile: Shopper taps “Buy” and completes the purchase on your storefront through an in-app browser
