A/B testing (also called split testing) is a method of comparing two versions of a webpage, email, or ad to see which one performs better. You show version A to half your audience and version B to the other half, then measure which version produces more conversions, clicks, or whatever outcome you are optimizing for. The winning version becomes your default.
Instead of guessing what works, A/B testing lets you make decisions based on actual customer behavior.
Why It Matters
Every change you make to your store is a hypothesis. “A bigger add-to-cart button will increase sales.” “Free shipping messaging in the header will reduce abandoned carts.” “Shorter product descriptions will improve conversion rates.” Without testing, you are guessing. Some guesses will be right, but many will be wrong or neutral.
A/B testing eliminates guesswork by measuring real impact. A change that improves conversion rate by 0.5% might seem small, but on a store processing 10,000 visitors per month, that is 50 additional orders. Over a year, that single test could generate thousands in additional revenue.
The stores that grow fastest are not the ones that make the most changes. They are the ones that test their changes and only keep what works.
How A/B Testing Works
Step 1: Identify what to test. Choose one element to change based on data. Look at your Google Analytics to find pages with high traffic but low conversion. These are your biggest opportunities.
Step 2: Create variations. Build version A (the control, your current page) and version B (the variant, with one change). Only change one element at a time so you know exactly what caused any difference.
Step 3: Split traffic. Your testing tool randomly assigns visitors to either version A or version B. Each visitor consistently sees the same version throughout their session.
Step 4: Collect data. Run the test until you reach statistical significance, meaning the results are unlikely due to random chance. This typically requires hundreds or thousands of conversions, depending on your traffic volume.
Step 5: Analyze and implement. If version B wins with statistical significance, implement it as your new default. If there is no significant difference, keep version A and test something else.

What to A/B Test on Shopify
Product pages. Test product image layouts, description length, review placement, add-to-cart button color and size, pricing presentation, and trust badges. Product pages are where purchase decisions happen, making them high-impact test candidates.
Collection pages. Test grid layout (3 vs 4 columns), product card information (price visibility, rating display), filter placement, and sort defaults on collection pages.
Checkout flow. Test guest checkout vs. account creation prompts, shipping threshold messaging, payment method ordering, and trust signals near the checkout.
Navigation. Test navigation menu structure, category naming, search bar placement, and promotional banner messaging.
Pricing and offers. Test discount code presentation (popup vs. banner), free shipping thresholds, and pricing display formats on your store.
Headlines and copy. Test value propositions, product titles, CTA button text (“Add to Cart” vs. “Buy Now”), and urgency messaging.
A/B Testing Tools for Shopify
Google Optimize (sunset). Google’s free testing tool was discontinued in 2023. Alternatives now dominate.
Shopify’s built-in A/B testing. Shopify offers limited native A/B testing for checkout customizations on Plus plans.
Third-party tools. Apps like Convert, VWO, Optimizely, or Neat A/B Testing integrate with Shopify to run tests on any page element. These handle traffic splitting, statistical analysis, and result reporting.
Common A/B Testing Mistakes
Testing too many things at once. If you change the headline, image, button, and layout simultaneously, you cannot know which change caused the result. Test one variable at a time.
Ending tests too early. A test showing a winner after 50 conversions is unreliable. Wait for statistical significance. Most tools indicate when you have enough data.
Ignoring sample size. Low-traffic stores struggle with A/B testing because reaching statistical significance takes too long. If your store gets fewer than 1,000 visitors per month, focus on larger changes rather than micro-optimizations.
Testing without a hypothesis. “Let’s make the button red” is not a hypothesis. “Changing the button to red will increase contrast and draw attention, improving click-through rate” is a testable hypothesis.
Not tracking the right metric. Optimizing for clicks when you should optimize for revenue can lead to changes that increase engagement but decrease sales.
Start with your highest-traffic, lowest-converting pages. Test bold changes first, then refine. One winning test can pay for your testing tool many times over.
