A domain name is the web address people type into their browser to visit your store, like “yourstore.com.” It is the human-readable version of your website’s IP address. Instead of remembering a string of numbers like 104.16.120.127, visitors and search engines use your domain name to find your site.
Every Shopify store gets a free myshopify.com subdomain (yourstore.myshopify.com), but connecting a custom domain is essential for brand credibility and SEO.
Why It Matters
Your domain name is your brand’s address on the internet. It appears in every search result, every marketing email, every social media link, and every business card. A custom domain like “yourstore.com” builds trust and looks professional, while “yourstore.myshopify.com” signals that you have not invested in your brand.
Domain names also affect SEO. Search engines associate ranking signals with your domain over time. Backlinks point to your domain. Brand searches include your domain name. Changing domains later means losing much of this accumulated authority, so choosing the right domain from the start matters.
Your domain name is one of the few permanent decisions in ecommerce. Choose carefully because changing it later has real SEO costs.
Parts of a Domain Name
A domain name has several components.
Top-level domain (TLD). The extension after the dot: .com, .shop, .store, .co, .io. For ecommerce, .com remains the most trusted and recognized TLD. If your preferred .com is taken, .shop and .store are credible alternatives for online stores.
Second-level domain. The main part you choose: “yourstore” in yourstore.com. This is your brand name or a keyword-relevant variation.
Subdomain. An optional prefix before the domain: “blog.yourstore.com” or “shop.yourstore.com.” Shopify uses subdomains for your default store address (yourstore.myshopify.com).

How to Choose a Good Domain Name
Keep it short. Shorter domains are easier to type, remember, and share. Aim for under 15 characters if possible.
Make it brandable. Choose something unique and memorable rather than stuffing keywords into your domain. “AllBirds.com” is better than “best-sustainable-shoes-online.com.”
Avoid hyphens and numbers. These make domains harder to communicate verbally and look less professional. “your-store-123.com” creates confusion.
Choose .com when possible. Most people still default to typing .com. If your ideal .com is unavailable, consider a slight variation of your brand name rather than switching to an uncommon TLD.
Check for trademarks. Before purchasing, verify that your desired domain does not infringe on existing trademarks. This avoids potential legal issues and forced domain changes.
Connecting a Domain to Shopify
Option 1: Buy through Shopify. Purchase a domain directly in your Shopify Admin under Settings > Domains. Shopify handles DNS configuration automatically, and the SSL certificate activates within minutes. This is the simplest approach.
Option 2: Use a third-party registrar. Buy your domain from a registrar like Namecheap, Google Domains, or GoDaddy, then connect it to Shopify by updating the DNS records. You will need to set an A record pointing to Shopify’s IP address (23.227.38.65) and a CNAME record pointing “www” to shops.myshopify.com.
Either way, set your custom domain as the primary domain in Shopify so all traffic redirects there. This ensures consistent URLs for SEO and prevents duplicate content issues that hurt canonical URLs.
Domain and SEO Considerations
Domain age. Older domains can carry more authority, but content quality matters far more. Do not overpay for an aged domain thinking it guarantees rankings.
Exact match domains. Domains that exactly match a search query (like “buyshoesoline.com”) used to provide an SEO advantage but are now treated like any other domain by Google. Focus on brand strength instead.
Domain changes. Moving to a new domain requires 301 redirects from every old URL to its new equivalent. Even with proper redirects, expect temporary ranking fluctuations. Update your Google Search Console property and sitemap when changing domains.
Get your custom domain set up before you start marketing. Every backlink, social share, and brand mention should point to your permanent domain from day one.
